This is called “Apps Only Mode” and is only available on Google TV devices such as the Google TV Streamer and the popular Onn 4K Pro.
In this guide, we walk you through the quick process to enable this feature on your device and free yourself from recommendations and more!
What is Apps Only Mode?
Those who have used media devices in the past have become accustomed to the constant advertisements being pushed at us on the home screen.
Those of us who use Android/Google boxes know that the home interface is riddled with Content Recommendations, Ads, and other unnecessary selections.
Pictured below is what the home screen currently looks like on Google TV platforms.

Many have turned to 3rd party launchers as alternatives that will remove ads and replace your home screen with only the apps that you have installed on your device.
However, most of these are a bit of a process to download and set up as they require sideload installation since they aren’t available in popular app stores.
Those of us who use a Google TV device have another option though that is a much simpler process than installing and enabling a Launcher.
Turning on Apps Only Mode developed by Google will remove a lot of the unnecessary clutter that seems to fill up the home screen, leaving you only with the installed apps that you have on your device.
As most of us know, there are numerous built-in “widgets” that we are accustomed to like the Live TV tab, top-selling movies, and more that bombard the home screen of Android/Google TV boxes.
Many prefer a simplified home screen with only the apps they use daily and we can easily get this with the Apps Only mode as pictured below.

If you are one of these people, you can easily turn this feature on within Settings by following the steps below.
